Title: Is there a STEM education crisis?

Sixty years ago, when the Soviet Union launched a small sphere less than two feet across into orbit, Americans panicked. They proclaimed a crisis in math and science education, and the crisis has been with us ever since. In the past thirty years, the level of alarm has risen to fevered pitch, and STEM education seems to get worse year by year. What’s the evidence for this education carnage? What are the reasons for today’s increased alarm? Why does American society have an apocalyptic view of education? This is an examination of America’s education crisis from a scientific point of view.
