Title: Mathematical modeling of thin-film flows and tropical rainfall
Abstract: Joseph Fourier investigated several ideas that have become the basis of many powerful mathematical tools. In this talk, we will review some of his ideas and look at several ways in which they are used in the fields of fluid dynamics and atmospheric science. For example, these ideas are useful in studying partial differential equations (PDEs) that model the flow of thin films, and we will show that these PDEs accurately reproduce several features seen in experiments. Fourier’s ideas are also used in identifying patterns in tropical rainfall, and we will look at several methods for systematically identifying these patterns in observational data.
