Title: Padé rational approximations and their use modeling underwater acoustics.
Abstract:Functions of matrix operators are often evaluated using their Taylor series expansions. Unfortunately, just like for Taylor series expansions of functions of real variables, many terms of the series may be required to achieve desired accuracy. One method for reducing the computation time and improving accuracy is to use Padé expansions, which form rational function approximations. Details of the Padé expansions will be presented and compared to Taylor series expansions for some basic functions. These expansions will be used to show how accurate solutions for underwater acoustic propagation problems can be obtained.
