Using Math to Fight Terrorism

Susan Martonosi is Associate Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College in California, USA.  She received her B.S. in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from Cornell University.  She then spent two years teaching high school mathematics in a remote town in Guinea, West Africa with the U.S. Peace Corps.  She received her Ph.D. in Operations Research from MIT and has been teaching at Harvey Mudd College since 2005.  She is also Director of the Mathematics Clinic Program, a senior project course that partners student teams with industry sponsors.  She co-founded the INFORMS Undergraduate Operations Research Prize in an effort to promote undergraduate research in the OR profession.  Her research expertise is in the mathematical modeling of problems in homeland security to improve both the security and operational efficiency of the system. Currently, she is exploring the use of social network theory to determine how best to disrupt terrorist networks. She enjoys involving undergraduates in her research and has mentored over twenty undergraduate research assistants.
